Making their Jup debut, Sifter is a Bay Area jazz quartet featuring Beth Schenck on alto saxophone, Rob Ewing on trombone, Lisa Mezzacappa on acoustic bass, and Jordan Glenn on drums. Formed in 2018, the group is a collective of composer-improvisers, with each member contributing original material to the repertoire. Their music blends deep improvisation, rich textures, and a wide range of grooves and moods. Without a chordal instrument, the band thrives on open forms and inventive interplay. Their debut album Flake/Fracture (Queen Bee Records, 2025) captures the distinctive sound they developed over years of monthly performances in Oakland, offering a playful, lyrical, and exploratory take on modern jazz.
